At the World Education Forum at Dakar, Senegal, 26-28 April 2000, the
participants committed themselves to the achievement of goals and
targets that are to ensure Education for All (EFA), i.e. education for
every citizen and for every society. They believed that "all children,
young people and adults have the human right to benefit from an
education that will meet their basic learning needs in the best and
fullest sense of the term, an education that includes learning to know,
to do, to live together and to be." (Dakar Framework of Action, 2000).
Since then, some progress has been made towards achieving these goals.
It has, however, also become clear that education is still not available
to all children and young people around the world; there exist grave
differences between continents, between countries and even between
children and young people in the same country. Social inequality has
been a major obstacle to implementing Education for All.
The symposium intends to have a closer look at the juxtaposition of
Education for All and social inequality. Nine internationally renowned
researchers – three from Latin America and six from Europe - will
present their views on the issue.
The symposium is being organised by Cristina Allemann-Ghionda from
Institute II and Karl Steffens from Institute III of the Faculty of
Human Sciences of the University of Cologne and hosted by the Center for
Diversity Studies (CEDIS). We are very grateful for the financial
support from the Fachgruppe Erziehungswissenschaft (Department of
Educational Sciences) without which we would not have been able to
invite the speakers.
